The Dog Days Are Upon Us

August 2nd, 2008

That’s right.  It’s really stinking hot out there.  We spent this morning with the useful run to the Farmer’s Market, Recycling Center, and our monthly, marathon of grocery shopping before retreating to the air conditioning.  We’re off to the park tonight for a friend’s birthday party and some intense sweating.  Welcome to August.

Yesterday, we took Ester and Justice to the first “Babes and Books” playgroup of the new school year.  Ester, of course, really loves the songs, and Justice loves to watch all the other people.  On the way out, Ester and Jena (her cousin) had to hold hands on the way to the cars.  It was super cute.

Finally, in one week we’ll be celebrating Ester’s second birthday.  I can’t believe it has been another year.  This week, I’ve been digitizing videos from our trip to Ethiopia and our early days back in Wichita last summer.  It’s amazing to see how fast our little girl is growing up and to compare her actions in Ethiopia to Justice now, as they are about the same age.   What a wonderful journey it has been, and we’re just getting started!

Two-Thirds Smiles

Kids

We’re just back from Wes and Nancy’s house where we celebrated Chris’ mom’s birthday. We had a great time eating fajitas and playing in the yard with the kids. Jena and Ester played in the sandbox and entertained us as usual. Lily challenged the brothers to a rousing game of kickball which ended without a fight (always a plus!).

Kid's Table

The celebration capped an interesting week. Natasha has been feeling sick most of the week. Ester got another mosquito bite which threatened to swell her eyes shut. And Justice spent Saturday night vomiting all over his parents’ sheets and several of his outfits. Thankfully, everyone is doing better now.

Anyway, we’ll leave you with some raw footage of a drum circle we happened upon on Final Friday, some Justice kung-fu, and a very happy song. Have a great week!

Today, Vernon Kirk turned 60 years old. It’s true. Since 1948, he’s been rocking in the free world. He’s accomplished a lot, raising three kids, being married for a long time, and building more houses than Ty Pennington. But, not until tonight could he achieve his greatest title yet:

Sexagenarian

And so, this evening we gathered in honor of this milestone. We dined on some Olive Garden and munched on some cake. Dignitaries from Virginia, Oklahoma City, and Kosovo joined us for the occasion. Ester got into the spirit.

Happy Birthday! Nice Hat

This party conclude a busy week full of Ethiopian leftovers, YouTube videos, and cookies with chick peas in them (Yes, chick peas). We’re enjoying having Ashley with us and are contemplating ways to kidnap her so she’ll stay longer. For now, we’re ready to kick back and enjoy the weekend that lies ahead.
