Beliefnet is hosting a great Blogalogue between Jim Wallis of Sojourner’s and David Klinghoffer, the author of “How Would God Vote? Why the Bible commands you to be conservative.” If the first few posts are any indication, this should be a great discussion.
Klinghoffer opened the dialogue with his philosophy of personal freedom. He stated that, “The most important word in any discussion of the Bible must be “commandment.” God commands us to choose right over wrong because we are not captives of Nature.” What a horrible view of the story of God in my opinion! Not love, peace, justice? Commandment? I’ve never heard this stated quite this way, but it makes sense with the positions and ideas that follow.
As always, Wallis presented a thoughtful and intelligent response. He shared that the Bible is neither conservative, nor liberal as we understand the terms. He wrote, “It (the Bible) is traditional or conservative on issues of family values, sexual integrity and personal responsibility, while being progressive, populist, or even radical on issues like poverty and racial justice. It affirms good stewardship of the earth and its resources, supports gender equality, and is more internationally minded than nationalist–looking first to peacemaking and conflict resolution when it come to foreign policy questions, instead of bowing to the habit of war.” Jim goes on to break down Klinghoffer’s rejection of taxes from a biblical basis by placing the scriptures in context.
Anyway, give it a read and let me know what you think.
